"Me too," Tarlio woofed, "I've not really hunted like that before. When I was travelling with Red, neither of us were used to hunting with other wolves, us both being loners. So instead we just took in turns, bringing back a hare or a bird each. And obviously when I was travelling alone, I hunted alone. But I enjoy hunting with others more, I think."
The russet wolf caught sight of Marcious, gloomy-faced and meat in jaw, slinking away to his den. He was definately mad with them. Tarlio had partly expected for he and Oran to be invited on the next main hunt, but, of course, the leader was more bitter than grateful towards them.

"Don't take it to heart. Marcious is always like that with omegas, but he tolerates us. What's it like being a loner then?" Oran asked to bring Tarlio's gaze and mind off the bitter leader.

A strange smile came onto Tarlio's face as the question was asked. It was a very small, sad smile, one that expressed both opposite emotions at the same time in one gesture. "It is freedom, and it is lonely," the wolf sighed, his eyes glazed with emotion and memories, "I was never tied down by anything but survival. You see everything and go everywhere. But it's you alone."

"So what made you want to join our pack?" Oran questioned, unsure why his of all the packs in the area was the one chosen by the loner.

"Well, my initial intention was to join a pack and discover what I could of their laws to see if I could find a loophole to get me back to Lu-... back into the pack of True Ice. On the way, and after I met Red, we did cross many pack borders, but we decided to pass through without dropping by. I was in search of a larger pack."
Tarlio tried to choose his words carefully so as not to offend Oran somehow. He couldn't imagine he would, but it had taken some effort to gain this abused young wolf's trust and he didn't want to lose that now.

"Ah, okay. Loopholes. What would you need to find a loophole around? A banishment?" Oran questioned quizzically.

"Exactly," Tarlio replied enthusiastically, trying to remember the exact law that got him banished in the first place, "I had to fight this wolf that was under trail for attempted murder, but he was able to claim santuary by taking Luna as his mate. As I said before, I challenged him to trail by combat to get rid of him, but.... lost. So I was kicked out. Is there a loophole that you know of?"

Oran thought about the rules of the pack of True Ice. They were similar to his pack, but there were a few differences. For example, if a wolf lost the fight over banishment the wolf would be killed, not driven out.
"Umm. You can go back after the wolf does something terrible and then challenge him again. By then, it's the pack's vote whether you are allowed to fight him or not. But that's the only thing I know about," Oran offered, apologetic that he didn't know any more about the matter.

"Hmm," Tarlio pondered for a moment, "That could be of use, thanks. Though it's going to be hard to accuse Oburoka of anything; he's the leader now, or he acts like it. He makes the laws as he goes along."
Tarlio returned to cleaning himself, rasping his rough tongue across his chest, deep in thought.

"Oh, Oburoka? I've heard of him. A nasty brute. If he's leader then, you can go to his pack and challenge him for being the alpha. If you win the fight to the death, you become leader," Oran elaborated.

Tarlio looked at Oran, a new hope burning intensly in his amber eyes before it quickly died away and was replaced by frustration.
"Well, that's perfect. The only problem is, I can't beat him, no one can. Trust me. The next time he sees me, he'll kill me. I guess I'll have to wait here for a while longer. It could be worse."

Oran rolled his eyes. "There is always a way to beat someone. Sometimes, for omegas, we set up for a fight against an alpha. If we win, we become the lowest alpha. If we lose, we're humiliated. I beat Matvei, but because I'm half dog I'm still an omega," Oran admitted.

"What?" Tarlio huffed disbelievingly, looking Oran up and down for a second. "You beat Matvei in a fight? That enormous fellow with the strange accent? How in the stars did you do that?!"

"I'm fast, Matvei is not. It's as simple as that. I used what I already had, not what I had to develop," Oran explained. He had used a trick to beat the larger wolf, and it got him a bit more respect than before.

Tarlio laughed, "I wish I had been there when it happened! I met the wolf yesterday. I don't know any wolf who would to try him in a fight, let alone myself... Let alone you!"
The loner paused and he set about picking the dirt out of his claws with his teeth.
"So, how do you propose I beat a wolf like Oburoku?" he barked at last, now trusting Oran's input as much as any other more 'experianced wolf' in the pack.

"Well, Oburoka's really big, and his temper is even bigger from what I've heard. Get him out of his game and he'll look like a puppy," Oran shrugged to the other wolf.

"So you're saying to humiliate him and make him angry," Tarlio broke down, "That way he'll be careless and easy to defeat. I will hand it to you, Oran, you have a suprising brilliance for fighting stratagies. Surely a pack like this could do with a wolf like you more than they realise."

Oran sighed. His father had been a tactical genius, and he knew here he got it from. "Yes, but this pack is also unaccepting of rule-breaking, and I'm the product of one. I only stay here because it's better than being a loner, no offense."

Tarlio's fur ruffled in a chilling breeze, "None taken. You're probably right, you know. But in my opinion, it's Marcios' loss here when he made you omega instead of his right-hand wolf."
The russet wolf watched as Azar and Liath trotted across the clearing and purchased some meat from the deer he and Oran had caught.

"You really care about her, huh?" Oran asked. It was plain for him to see; Oran ad fallen for the she-wolf, Luna. That was why he was so anxious to find a loophole. And the omega could see the way the wolf's eyes lit up when he talked about her.

"What?" Tarlio snapped from a day dream he hadn't meant to have, "Wh-who on earth do you mean?"
The wolf knew exactly who Oran was talking about.
"You mean... You mean Luna? No! I mean yes, well, I do care about her, just not, you know... errm... I just..." The russet wolf sighed, "I just can't leave her where she is."

Oran rolled his eyes. Even though he was one of them, he could tell why the females thought males were so stupid.
"Tell me how you would be me in a fight," Oran said, curious what Tarlio's reaction would be. "I'm very fast, but I'm not strong. Those are the two main factors you need to look at. And I use my jaws as much as possible."

"Hmm," Tarlio thought for a moment, glad that the subject was changing, "It would be hard to catch you. I guess I would try to catch you off guard and knock off your balance. That would make you very vulnerable to attack."
